Carpal Tunnel, Wrist and Elbow Pain Care in Wheaton and Naperville

Numb fingers and a sore wrist can come from the wrist itself, the elbow, or a nerve irritated in the neck. Working out which is the first step, because the care is different for each.

What brings people in

  • Numbness or tingling in the thumb and first fingers
  • Wrist pain from typing, tools or lifting
  • Tennis or golfer's elbow
  • A weak or clumsy grip

When it is urgent. See a medical provider promptly for sudden hand weakness, a wrist injury with swelling and deformity, or numbness that follows a fall.

How we approach it

  1. 1

    Trace the nerve

Nerve, grip and joint tests from the neck to the fingertips, to separate a wrist problem from one that starts higher up.

  2. 2

Care for the joint and the muscle

Mobilization of the wrist and elbow, muscle work for the forearm, and adjustments to the neck when that is the source.

  3. 3

    Change the load

Workstation and grip changes, and exercises you can do between visits.

Care is provided by Dr. Adam Tilson, D.C., and Dr. Michael Rager, D.C., chiropractic physicians. Results vary from person to person.

Common questions

Is it carpal tunnel or neuropathy?

Carpal tunnel usually affects the thumb side of one hand and is worse at night or with gripping. Peripheral neuropathy more often affects both hands or both feet. The exam tells them apart, and we evaluate both.

Can I avoid surgery?

Many people try conservative care first. We will tell you after the exam whether we think that is reasonable, and when a surgical opinion makes more sense.
