Sciatica and Leg Pain Care in Wheaton and Naperville

Pain that runs from the lower back or buttock down the leg has several possible sources: a disc, a joint, or a tight piriformis muscle pressing on the nerve. Care depends on which one it is.

What brings people in

  • Pain, burning or tingling down the back of one leg
  • Pain that is worse when sitting or driving
  • Numbness in part of the leg or foot
  • A deep ache in the buttock

When it is urgent. Go to an emergency room for loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or leg weakness that is getting worse.

How we approach it

  1. 1

    Locate the source

Nerve, strength and reflex testing, with movement tests that separate a disc problem from a muscle or joint one.

  2. 2

    Take pressure off

Adjustments, traction and, at our Naperville office, spinal decompression when the exam supports it.

  3. 3

    Rebuild

Stretching for the hip and piriformis, and core strengthening once the pain allows.

Care is provided by Dr. Adam Tilson, D.C., and Dr. Michael Rager, D.C., chiropractic physicians. Results vary from person to person.

Common questions

Is it sciatica or neuropathy?

Sciatica usually follows one nerve down one leg. Peripheral neuropathy more often affects both feet. The exam tells them apart, and we evaluate both.

Should I rest or keep moving?

Gentle movement usually helps more than bed rest. We will show you which movements to favor and which to avoid for now.
